We sow in tranches in February and agree with Alys Fowler the fruit are the sweeter for it and enjoyed sooner in the summer. With a headstart on the season, even with the largest heirloom beefsteak and oxheart varieties we've had stunning success growing outdoors in full sun.
All you'll need is an outside area sheltered from wind with several hours direct sunlight, some support for the vines and a larger pot for your plant - or better still a patch of free draining soil with plenty of rich organic matter.
We recommend pairing your order with our herbs to grow as 'companion plants' to help deter disease and pests.
Large tomato plants
Plants in upcycled red and gold tomato cans drilled for drainage, holding 2.5 litres of organic compost and supported with short canes.
Plants will be nearly ready to be planted out and at the flowering stage. See Tomato Growing Tips for planting out.
£8 for one plant, £15 for two, or £20 for three plants.
We will deliver to you by Fri 16th May
This year we have 9 Tomato varieties, a mix of types new to us and our favourites.
All are indeterminate, meaning they will bloom, set new fruit and ripen continuously through the growing season.
Belarusian Heart - SOLD OUT
This is a very sweet, tasty and early fruiting red oxheart tomato. The fruits are medium to large with a delicious, complex flavour. Just amazing fresh with a little sea salt and good oil, or in sauce. Our largest fruit was around 750g.
This is our favourite - we grow it every year in the greenhouse. The fruit sizes vary (see Gallery with the pic of weighing scales).
Costoluto Genovese - SOLD OUT
Fat, juicy, ribbed red fruit 200-250g yielding heavily over a long season. Created by cultivators in Florence this is a delicious Italian variety ideal for salads or cooking. Real Seeds say: 'Tall, vigorous plants start to fruit early, and it's a steady producer, cropping over a long period.'
Costoluto Fiorentino is one of our favourites so we're trying the Genovese type out this year.
Galina (organic)
Potato-leafed vine variety that produces high yields of large yellow cherry tomatoes around 20g.
Real Seeds say: 'a hugely productive cherry from Siberia, and we are really impressed by it - very sweet flavour balanced by good acidity. It is early to get going (not surprising given where it comes from!), but just as importantly, it fruits over a long period – it just keeps on going forever, long after most other plants have stopped fruiting.'
We haven't tried Galina yet. We don't grow many cherry types, but this one sounded irresistible.
Marmande - SOLD OUT
Classic beefsteak tomato variety named after a city in South-West France. It's easy to care for and produces large, deep red fruits with few seeds of various sizes (80-180g) with a thin skin. They are a Provençal favourite and are great for salads and cooking.
We grew this last year. The vines grew to a little under 6 feet and it was a prolific fruiter.
Moskvich - SOLD OUT
Deep red, globe-shaped fruit with a rich flavour between 110-170g. Very productive, very early season heirloom variety from Russia with a high cold tolerance so great for outdoor growing. Real Seeds customers have grown it in the Scottish Highlands.
Real Seeds say: 'A great new variety from our 2018 Early Tomato Trials. We chose it from a collection of northern-adapted varieties as it sounded amazing - not only a rich flavour, but cold-resistant.'
This is our first year trying Moskvich. This is semi-determinate but very vigorous so you'll need to stay on top of your sideshoots to enjoy heavy yields (see Growing Tips).
Pink Dreams (organic) - SOLD OUT
Fruit is flat-round and deep pink in hue. High yielding, with a balanced sweetness and acidity. Low seed content. Real Seeds sourced it from Bulgaria and say: 'huge - really huge (over half a kg)- glowing pink fruit with a truly excellent flavour. A perfect balance of acid and sweet, with a subtle smoky undertone; just perfect - this is the one we all rush to take home to cook with after deseeding.'
We grew this for the first time last year. The skins are quite thin, so eat soon after picking.
Red Brandywine
Large irregularly shaped deep red fleshy fruit around 400g. Potato leaf heirloom type. Dating to 1885, Tomato 'Brandywine' is one of the finest, "classic" flavoured beefsteak tomatoes.
We've grown this every year for several years and prefer it to other Brandywines.
San Marzano 2
RHS Plants say: 'A popular plum tomato with large crops of dense, meaty-fleshed fruits with few seeds and produced over a long period from early in the season. San Marzano 2 is the latest variety of this classic Italian tomato which is used mainly for cooking and is perfect for making sauces and passata.' Fruit are 70-100g. Sounds like you may need to limit the number of trusses to 3-4.
This is our first year growing San Marzano 2, but we love the original smaller version. We wanted one type prized especially for making sauce to store in our freezer.
Yellow Pear
Produces plentiful crops of yellow, pear shaped, cherry tomatoes (20-30g) with a mild and tangy flavour. This is an heirloom variety originating in Europe in the 1800s.
We grew this a few years ago over a garden arch for additional support and found it very productive.
